September 17 is Citizenship Day, established in 1952 by President Harry S. Truman to coincide with the date of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.

There are a number of celebrations on September 16. We chose Mayflower Day that commemorates the day 102 men, women and children set sail for the new world from Plymouth, England in 1620.

September 15 is Make a Hat Day, a very popular day in elementary schools where children are urged to create a hat as an art project.

No one seems to know who started this day, but we sure are glad September 14 is National Cream Filled Donut Day. It’s time to head out to your favorite donut shop to celebrate. Wikimedia photo.

The symbol of America dates back to the 1800s and became official in 1989 when a joint resolution of Congress named September 13th  “Uncle Sam Day.”

September 12th is “Chocolate Milk Shake Day.” A little milk, some chocolate ice cream, a dash of chocolate syrup and you’re ready for this day!

September 11th is “Remembrance Day” when we all are encouraged to spend some time thinking about the events of September 11, 2001.

September 10th is “Sewing Machine Day,” commemorating the invention of the sewing machine in France in the 1830s. In 1846, the sewing machine was patented in the United States.

September 8th is “International Literacy Day,” created by the United Nations. According to their website, “The aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.”
