September 23 is Checkers Day. Do you want to be red or black? No, Checkers Day refers to that day in 1952, when Richard M. Nixon made a speech denying he had used an $18,000 campaign contribution for personal use. He did make reference to the gift of a dog his daughters received that they named “Checkers.” At the time, Nixon was a candidate for Vice-President of the U.S. with Dwight D. Eisenhower.
